The Zombie Feed reviews The Dead Matter original motion picture soundtrack.
One of the toughest jobs in the writing business can sometimes be getting in the mood. Not in the mood to write, but being in the right mood to produce the emotional resonance you’re seeking in your text. Whenever I want to place myself in a somber, darker mood, I drop in a Midnight Syndicate CD and let Edward and Gavin work their magic.
Edward (Douglas) and Gavin (Goszka) are Midnight Syndicate, although it appears that Douglas has done most of the heavy lifting on this CD. There are also contributions contributions by bands Lazy Lane, Eternal Legacy, and HipNostic along with a solo piece by Goszka.
I’m afraid I don’t have the ear to eloquently review music. I can tell you that I like a person but I can’t give you a technical readout of why (great harmonies, melodic, etc.). So I’ll just say that I liked this soundtrack. About half the songs were standard Gothic tunes of good quality. Two or three clunkers are interspersed. But there are two tracks that rank as some of the best work produced by Midnight Syndicate
“Lost” is a dark, pushing work by Gavin Goszka. It’s a bit of an outlier in terms of the expected Midnight Syndicate ‘sound’ and perhaps that’s why it’s so striking. It shows that the guys can expand beyond Gothic and work the electronic vibe. The Dead Matter End Credit Suite is an outstanding piece of Syndicate Gothic music. You want to hook your friends on Midnight Syndicate, then this is a good candidate for the job.
The guest appearances on the CD are a mixed bag. I did enjoy “The Graveyard” by Lazy Lane. Eternal Legacy was loud and aggressive, perhaps not thing and just not something I want on a dark, thoughtful, and rather subdued Midnight Syndicate album.
Overall, this is yet another must-grab for Midnight Syndicate fans. For those experiencing their first tastes of our favorite Gothic musicians, I would suggest their 2005 album The 13th Hour.
